Everyday Landscapes

Award-winning fine art abstract photography series.

Jay Tang first began exploring the transformation of simple materials during his final year at the Fotovakschool in Amsterdam, where he created Papercuts, a series of photographs of colored cardboard. Conceived as a creative exercise in search of a graduation theme, the project laid the groundwork for his next series, Drop Shadow—a six-part work that distilled the same concept to its essentials.

These early experiments became the foundation for Everyday Landscapes, Tang’s ongoing body of work that reimagines everyday materials like paper, tissues, pillow stuffing, and plastic bags, into abstract landscapes and still lifes. By manipulating light, form, and shadow, he challenges the viewer’s perception, presenting images that blur the boundary between reality and imagination.

A strong Chinese influence runs through his practice. Drawing from his cultural heritage, Tang creates contemporary interpretations of traditional Chinese painting and poetry, evoking their sense of atmosphere and abstraction through the medium of photography.

His work has been exhibited in the Netherlands, Hong Kong, and the United States. In 2020, Tang presented his first solo exhibition, Everyday Landscapes, in collaboration with Anita Neve Gallery. In 2024, he received international recognition, being awarded Photographer of the Year (Minimalism) by the Exposure One Awards and Photographer of the Year (Abstract) by the 1839 Awards.
